Ten Top Ways to Celebrate the Platinum Jubilee

3 May 2022

We are only a month away from the Platinum Jubilee weekend, and what a weekend it’s shaping up to be. The Platinum Jubilee celebrations mark the 70th year since Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne.

Arguably the most recognisable person in the UK, the Queen’s rich history provides the perfect backstory to the different ways you can toast her reign in style.

Born on the 21st of April 1926, she was the first child to the late King George VI and Queen Elizabeth I. Our monarch grew up in the UK and remained throughout the duration of WWII, performing a variety of duties despite only being in her teens. In 1940, at 14-years old she made her first radio broadcast, addressing children who had been evacuated from cities, stating:

"We are trying to do all we can to help our gallant sailors, soldiers, and airmen, and we are trying, too, to bear our own share of the danger and sadness of war. We know, every one of us, that in the end all will be well."

The war continued for five more years but during that time she visited the Grenadier Guards and trained as a driver and mechanic.

Two years after the war ended, at the age of twenty-one, she made this pledge to the British Commonwealth:

"I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.”

And long it has been! As of her birthday in April the Queen is now 96-years old and Britain’s longest lived and longest reigning monarch. She is also only two years off becoming the world’s longest reigning monarch, the title currently held by Louis XIV of France.

Prior to her ascension to the throne, she married Prince Philip on the 20th of November 1947, following an eight-year romance.

Her father passed in the February of 1952 and Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne at the age of only twenty-five. Her coronation was held a year later, after mourning her fathers’ death, on the 2nd of June 1953.

The Jubilee Celebrations

Marking the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s remarkable reign, the Platinum Jubilee is set to be an unforgettable event. It’s being celebrated across the Commonwealth in 2022 from February, right through to her official birthday and coronation date in June 2022.

There has already been many amazing events and tributes to mark this landmark occasion, but there is more to come with the main celebration being held across the extended bank holiday in June which takes place from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th of June 2022 in the UK.

Here is a selection of events that have already happened to mark the lead up to the Platinum Jubilee weekend.

In January 2022, The Platinum Pudding competition was launched to find the best pudding to celebrate the Jubilee. Five finalists prepared their creations for a panel of judges, but for the public we will have to wait until the Jubilee weekend for the winning recipe to be unveiled.

In March, a concert titled The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – 70 Years, took place at the Royal Albert Hall. It showcased some of the most note worthy musical moments from the Queen’s reign.

There is still the 2022 Royal Windsor Horse Show to come, taking place between the 12th and 15th May. The show will be titled A Gallop Through History and will end with a celebration in honour of the Queen, featuring 500 horses and 1,000 dancers.

But it doesn’t have to stop there!

A once in a generation show, mixing the best of British ceremonial splendour and pageantry with cutting-edge artistic and technological displays, has been promised by the British Government. It’s no wonder either as this is the first time in history that a British monarch has celebrated a Platinum Jubilee.

To start off the Platinum Jubilee weekend the Queen’s birthday parade, Trooping the Colour, will be held on Thursday 2nd of June. Over a thousand parading soldiers, horses, and musicians will march together in a parade to usher in the Queen’s official birthday. The parade will conclude with a Royal Air Force flypast over Buckingham Palace.

On 4th of June, the ‘Platinum Party at the Palace’ concert will take place in the evening at Bucking Palace. The concert will be produced and broadcast by the BBC and will be distributed throughout the UK and European Union.

On the last day of the extended bank holiday, 5th of June, the public are encouraged to partake in the Big Jubilee Lunch, a jubilee twist on The Big Lunch, aimed at bringing people together to celebrate their connections and strengthen community bonds. Tables will line the Long Walk with the option to reserve seats. You don’t have to be in London to get involved, reach out to your local community and host your own.

There will also be a pageant with roughly 5,000 participants from the UK and commonwealth taking place, with a mixture of street art, theatre, music, circus, carnival, and costume in celebration of the Jubilee. It will be televised around the Big Jubilee Lunch at Long Walk and nationwide for viewers at home.

There are plenty of options when it comes to getting involved in the Platinum Jubilee. With the celebrations kicking off in a month, now is the last chance to booking.
