Spotlight on... Lisbon Incentive Travel

21 August 2018

If you wrote down everything you wanted from a dream incentive travel destination, the list might just come out looking like a description of Lisbon.

Stunning sea views across cheerfully painted houses, great hotels, a buzzing bar and restaurant scene where budgets stretch a surprisingly long way, cobbled streets, beautiful beaches and world-class golf, sailing and surfing on the doorstep…

Lisbon incentive travel groups are spoilt for choice in this beautiful, compact city – and its iconic trams, São Jorge Castle and legendary hills are just a short hop from the UK.

It’s an unforgettable, intoxicating destination. Let’s take a closer look at what Lisbon incentive travel groups have to look forward to…

Getting There & Getting Around

There are over 100 London - Lisbon flights every week (BA from Heathrow/budget airlines from Luton and Gatwick). Average flight time is around 2.5 hours.

Once you’re in Lisbon taxis are cheap and transfers can be pre-booked. Alternatively, the metro from the airport into the city takes 20 mins. Trams and funiculars are also a great part of the Lisbon experience – just hop on and buy tickets on board!

Where to Go & What to Do

Our picks for what Lisbon incentive travel groups should see and do in the city include:

Plan Around an Event: Plan your incentive around the city’s spectacular Rio-style carnival in spring, festivals of music and dance throughout June (including Rock in Rio Lisboa), October’s Fashion Week and Lisbon Marathon, or any one of the city’s buzzing flagship events through the year.

Discover the City: Book a Segway (or a Sitway – seated Segways!) tour for your group, or take in amazing city views from the top of the Santa Justa Elevator. Hop on the iconic Tram 28 to criss-cross the city centre and see the key sights, and take your team to the Telecabine Lisboa for an evening cable car ride over the illuminated city.

Join the Club: Lisbon is renowned for its golf courses—highlights within easy reach include the legendary Penha Longa Golf Club (former host of the Portuguese Open), the Estoril Golf Club, the Quinta da Marinha and the Campo de Golfe de Belas.

Get Active: Pull your wetsuit on and enjoy some of the best surfing in Europe – the Lisbon Surf House & School is only 10 mins from the city, quieter Ericeira is only around 20 miles from Lisbon.

Spend a morning learning to sail and then race yachts on the river Tagus, take your group on a jeep safari into the Arrábida mountains, or opt for classic car hire and wine tasting in Sintra.

Restaurants & Bars

With one of the most dynamic restaurant scenes in Europe, Lisbon incentive travel groups have some incredible dining options.

Try Prado, opened at the end of 2017, for seasonal fine-dining, O Watt by Kiko Martins, one of Lisbon's leading culinary masterminds, any of Portuguese celebrity chef José Avillez’s restaurants at the Barrio do Avillez, or Mezze – a crowdfunded restaurant staffed by Syrian refugees.

For drinks, head for the rooftop Sky Bar at the Tivoli Avenida Hotel for cocktails and views, ring a doorbell on an apartment block to be let into the 1920s-themed Red Frog Speakeasy, or toast your group by the river at Le Chat, a statement bar in a glass cube next to Lisbon's Ancient Art Museum.

Hotels

Lisbon has hotels in abundance – including a superb range of unique, unforgettable options. Our highlights include:

Verride Palácio de Santa Catarina: Featured in our 2018 10 Best Hotels in the World list a few weeks ago, this 18th-Century palace is just 30 mins from the airport at the edge of the buzzing Bica district. An excellent rooftop swimming pool and restaurant (Suba) offer stunning views over Lisbon.

Pousada de Lisboa: Exceptionally well located in the heart of historic Lisbon on the Praҁa do Comércio, effortlessly blending crisp, contemporary finishing and comforts with a sense of heritage. Extras include a spa, fitness suite, indoor pool and three very good restaurants.

Hotel Valverde Lisboa: A boutique hotel that will become the stuff of office legend – more New York townhouse than European city hotel. Lisbon incentive travel groups can enjoy extras from tea or champagne receptions on the terrace or in the pool, to dinner aboard the hotel's private yacht.
