Step 4: What Does Freedom Day Mean for Business Events?

7 July 2021

After Monday’s government announcement, the UK is on tenterhooks waiting for the final decision on ‘freedom day’ to be made on the 12th July.

Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, said in his address to the public that once step 4 is enabled, all restrictions will be lifted and become optional in most circumstances. There will also be no legal requirement for any form of Covid-certification such as proof of vaccination, negative test or natural antibodies.

This comes with further news that close contacts of confirmed cases of Covid will no longer have to isolate if they are fully vaccinated after 16th August.

The hugely positive impact this will have on the events industry goes without saying. For the first time since early 2020, we will see:

  • Events of all types able to go ahead without social distancing
  • Nightclubs to reopen, along with all other remaining businesses
  • Venue capacity caps lifted on major sporting events
  • Theatres to reopen with full capacity
  • Live music performances with full crowds at indoor and outdoor venues
  • The return of music festivals across the UK

But whilst things like face coverings are no longer a legal requirement, event organisers and businesses may wish to implement their own measures which could include face coverings in crowded places or their own version of Covid-status certification. Instead of legally enforced restrictions, PM Boris Johnson said individuals are to ‘make their own informed decisions about how to manage the virus’, essentially meaning event organisers will need to respond to the sentiments of their delegates and visitors.
