Spotlight on... Miami

22 July 2019

Last month Inconnection planned and delivered a client trip to one of America’s most unforgettable cities for events and incentive travel – Miami.

Located on South Florida's Atlantic Coast, Miami is world renowned as a centre for glitz, glamour and the finer things in life. It’s an unapologetically American city with strong Latin influences, beaches that rival the best in the world and a vibrant dining and nightlife scene.

Our client's three-day event took in the best of the Magic City, from its Art-Deco buildings and beaches to great restaurants and plenty of free time to soak up the South Florida sun, sea and sand. Join us for a look at what Miami added to our recent client event, and what it could offer yours.

Getting There & Getting Around

There are 45+ direct flights a week from London to Miami, with airlines including BA, American and Virgin Atlantic.

Flight times are between 9-10 hours, so be sure to allow for plenty of downtime in your itinerary, particularly if you’re only looking at a 3 or 4-day trip.

Flights from Gatwick or Heathrow can arrive at Miami Airport’s North or South terminals, where you can hop on a shuttle bus to Tri-Rail or Metrorail stations, or pick up pre-booked hotel transfers.

Where to Go & What to Do

Explore Miami: Everyone’s heard of Miami, but not everyone really gets to know it. Explore the city by foot, bike or Segway, and then head for some of its best sights for unforgettable experiences.

Unwind on the iconic Miami Beach, or soak up the culture at the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Explore waterside shops, bars and live music at Bayside Market. Get into the Cuban flavour of Little Havana, or bag courtside seats for a Miami Heat NBA game at the American Airlines Arena.

Airboat in the Everglades: Our client's group spent a morning exploring the Everglades. Around 40 mins outside of Miami, the Everglades National Park covers approximately 1.5 million acres and provides a wetland home for alligators, snakes, crocodiles and rare birds. The best way to explore this wonderland is how our group did – by airboat, a thrilling, high-speed experience that your group will never forget.

Get Snap Happy in Wynwood: Travelling with a younger group and looking for a super-trendy, Instagram-friendly location to get lunch? Try Wynwood Walls – possibly America’s coolest neighbourhood since 50 of the world’s best street artists breathed new life into this former Warehouse district. Eat at the Wynwood Kitchen, or hit Wynwood Yard for world-class street food, including Kuenko – a Japanese food truck by Riccardo Sanz of Madrid’s Michelin-starred Kabuki.

Hotels

Miami might have more great hotels per square mile than any other city in the states – but there are a few real standouts:

Nautilus: Our client's group stayed at the stylish Nautilus by Arlo in South Beach’s Art Deco District. Designed by Morris Lapidus (the godfather of Miami) in the 1950s, and recently renovated as South Beach’s chicest mid-century spot, our group loved its heated beachfront pool, luxurious poolside cabanas and superb restaurant – Driftwood Room by Alex Guarnaschelli – where they enjoyed dinner on their first night.

Mandarin Oriental Miami: The Mandarin Oriental Miami on Brickell Key is a destination resort known worldwide – and it’s easy to see why. A five-star hotel with a world-class spa, outrageously good Peruvian restaurant (La Mar by Gaston Acurio) and spectacular views over Biscayne Bay make this a contender for the best hotel in a very crowded field.

W South Beach: We’re big fans of the gutsy W hotel chain – and South Beach’s is as daring and provocative as any. Unreal beach views from huge balconies, electronic music in The Living Room, trend-challenging dining at Mr. Chow (a Beijing-inspired restaurant straight out of Beverly Hills), a palm-lined heated outdoor pool (WET®), indulgence at the and much more…

Restaurants & Bars

Our client’s group enjoyed the ultra-chic South Beach steak house STK, but Miami’s dining scene is packed with highlights. Try Wynwood’s Altar for new American cuisine in stripped-back industrial surroundings, high-end tapas at The Bazaar by José Andrés, or Nobu’s outstanding Asian-fusion.

Visitors are spoilt for choice with bars too. Our client’s group enjoyed beachside cabanas, Champagne and celebrity spotting at Nikki Beach¸ but other great bars for incentive groups include theAnderson for craft cocktails, rooftop favourite Sugar (40 floors up, with unreal city views), and Blackbird Ordinary for cocktails with live DJs.
