Spotlight on… Manchester for Events

20 November 2019

Manchester is one of the UK’s best destinations for events, incentives and even hospitality. We might be a bit biased, but it’s true. From conferences that bring together a globally dispersed sales force to a weekend celebrating success with fine dining and unforgettable entertainment, Manchester has everything you need.

Read on for a quick look at some of what Manchester has to offer your event, from great hotels and world-class venues, to Michelin-starred dining and a cocktail bar that everyone thinks is a laundrette…

Getting here & getting around

Manchester is one of the UK’s most accessible cities, with great road links and direct rail services.

Rail journey times:

  • London-Manchester: just over 2 hours
  • Birmingham-Manchester: 1hr 30mins
  • Liverpool-Manchester: 34mins.

International visitors usually arrive via Manchester Airport, which is minutes from the Inconnection office and just 15 minutes from the city centre.

Venues

From warehouses to cathedrals, aquariums to bank vaults, and football stadiums to art galleries, Manchester has a venue for any event.

For conferences and events at scale: We’re spoilt for choice with world-class venues such as Manchester Central which can host up to 10,000 attendees, Old Trafford with event spaces that have magnificent views over the pitch, and atmospheric, restored venues like the Albert Hall.

For smaller events: Choose a venue to remember. Our favourites include Factory (the former Factory Records HQ) and the Monastery – an unreal, awards-smashing venue in a 19th-Century monastery.

Entertainment & Hospitality

For music: Book your event around VIP tickets for the world’s biggest and best acts – they’ll be playing at Manchester Arena. The likes of Harry Styles, Snoop Dogg, Liam Gallagher and Elton John all have shows coming up in town.

For sport: Book hospitality with a private box for either a Manchester United or Manchester City game, and enjoy great views with lunch and drinks. Bag ringside seats for heavyweight boxing at Manchester Arena, head to the National Cycling Centre for a nail-biting track race, or dive into the glitz and glamour of the NFL – top-flight American football right here in Manchester.

Other ideas: Think outside the box for a memorable Manchester evening – from world-class comedy to a monster truck show, or multi-award-winning acrobatics from the legendary Cirque du Soleil.

Restaurants & Bars

For unforgettable dining: The big news on Manchester’s dining scene is that the city has its first Michelin-starred eatery in decades, thanks to ex-Noma chef Simon Martin’s new restaurant Mana.

Three Little Words is a more laid-back option – and it’s next to Manchester Central. Think great gin cocktails, stripped back industrial interiors and a seasonal menu – see Manchester’s 5 Hottest New Restaurants for 2019 for a full write up.

For a taste of the high life that won’t break the bank, book a private room at the Ivy, Spinningfields. With a brasserie and an Asian-inspired restaurant and cocktail bar complete with illuminated semi-precious stone floor, it’s hard to beat.

For drinks to remember: Head for the Washhouse – a secret speakeasy disguised as a laundrette – enjoy a gin fizz and bowling at All Star Lanes, or immerse your group in Science & Industry, a mad scientist’s lab of a cocktail bar.

For drinks with a view head for Cloud 23 in the landmark Beetham Tower, Hotel Gotham’s rooftop bar Brass, or book out the Skylounge terrace bar at the Hilton Hotel.

Hotels

Manchester has some great hotels for event groups, from international chains with in-house event spaces, to tucked-away independent boutiques. Our highlights include:

King Street Townhouse: Great service, a small but outstanding in-house restaurant and bags of class and character. The real wow-factor here though has to be the hotel’s infinity pool, with spectacular views over the town hall. Designed for unforgettable Manchester moments!

Principal: A huge luxury hotel in Manchester’s buzzing heart. The Principal balances wow-factor and historic grandeur with relaxed bedrooms and a trendy bar and restaurant – Refuge by Volta.

Radisson Blu Edwardian Manchester: A brilliantly central five-star hotel set in one of Manchester’s most prestigious buildings. It’s handy for all the sights and Manchester Central, and has a unique restaurant, Peter Street Kitchen, offering innovative food and great cocktails.

Other favourites include the historic Manchester Marriott Victoria & Albert Hotel, the Northern Quarter’s super Instagram-able Cow Hollow Hotel, and Abode Manchester, a converted Victorian textile warehouse minutes from Manchester Piccadilly.
